چکیده

We examine the qualitative features of parton production through materialization in heavy-ion collisions within perturbative QCD, and estimate the magnitude of the resulting parton density created during the early stage of the collisions. The implications for " anomalous " J/ψ suppression observed in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN SPS are discussed. We argue that the A-dependence of absorption of J/ψ by (partonic) comovers is steeper than assumed in most phenomenological models, because the absorption process is dominated by quasi-perturbative QCD interactions. Our argument is supported by results recently obtained in the framework of the parton cascade model. We predict significant " anomalous " suppression for Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN-SPS, but not for S+U collisions.

Dilepton signals in heavy ion collisions at the CERN SPS

This paper overviews the main results on dilepton and heavy flavour production in heavy ion collisions, obtained in measurements done at the CERN SPS, over the last few years. The presently available results are very interesting, indicating the production of a new state of matter in central Pb-Pb collisions at SPS energies. However, important questions remain open. New and improved measurements...

Interplay of Parton and Hadron Cascades in Nucleus-nucleus Collisions at the Cern Sps and Rhic

We introduce a Monte Carlo space-time model for high-energy collisions with nuclei, involving the dynamical interplay of perturbative QCD parton production and evolution, with non-perturbative parton-cluster formation and ‘afterburner’ cascading of formed pre-hadronic clusters plus hadron excitations. This approach allows us to trace the space-time history of parton and hadron degrees of freedo...

Searching for Quark Matter at the CERN SPS

This article gives a brief overview of some recent advances in our understanding of the physics of dense strongly interacting matter, from measurements done at the CERN SPS. The presently available results are very interesting, and are likely to reflect the production of a new state of matter in central Pb-Pb collisions, at the highest SPS energies. However, important questions require further ...

Onset of Deconfinement in Pb+Pb Collisions at the Cern SPS

The NA49 fixed-target experiment studied high energy–density matter produced in nucleus–nucleus reactions at the CERN SPS. In central Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV the energy density at the early stage substantially exceeds the threshold for quark deconfinement predicted by lattice QCD. The produced matter shows strong transverse and longitudinal flow. Ratios of yields of produced particles are ...

Jet quenching as observed via high pT hadron production is studied in the HIJING1.35 model. We test the model on recent WA98 data on 160 AGeV Pb+ Pb → π up to 4 GeV/c. The results depend sensitively on the model of the Cronin effect. At (RHIC) collider energies ( √ s > 200 AGeV), on the other hand, semi-hard hadron production becomes insensitive to the above model and is thus expected to be a c...
